Brazilian BBQ Seen At The Olympics

Brazilian BBQ finally makes it’s Olympic debut!

The 2016 Summer Olympics are in full swing in Rio de Janeiro. With America dominating, commanding a total of 24 gold medals, it is a very exciting year indeed. Michael Phelps has taken 5 gold medals, Simone Biles has taken 3. And the US has officially won a total of 1000 gold medals. Michael Phelps also broke an ancient record dating back to 152 B.C. Phelps has won 13 individual Gold medals, surpassing Leonidas of Rhodes. The best part is, it’s not even over yet. We still have a solid week of games ahead of us! Something else that is exciting is how many people are taking to churrasco, Brazilian barbecue despite its initial lack of presence at the actual games.

What is Brazilian BBQ?

If you’re reading this, you probably already know what Brazilian BBQ is. For those of you who don’t, it is a form of cooking that hails from southern Brazil. Foods that are prepared churrasco style, typically meats, are grilled over open embers on a skewer. While many Brazilian barbecue establishments do not use grills, Brazilian BBQ is typically prepared on a grill. This is specially designed to support the skewers over the embers. Introduced to the United States in the 1950’s, many Americans have developed a love for churrasco. So it doesn’t surprise me that the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro has reignited the passion for Brazilian cuisine, particularly it’s barbecue.

With meat having a high protein value, we are excited to see how many Olympians indulged in the Brazilian cuisine, and how big of a role Brazilian BBQ played. The diet plans of athletes are usually released when the games are over. In fact, a lot of information is kept under tight lock and key. One thing is for sure right now though, and that is the amount of fans and followers now enjoying churrasco at the games.

Food Vendors at the Olympics embrace Brazillian BBQ Method!

With food vendors scarce and having issues, (more info on that HERE ) it was surprising that we didn’t initially see any Brazilian barbecue on the menu. It’s easy to make, efficient, and gives you the juice you need to keep going. Inside the Olympics, the American cuisine like hot dogs and hamburgers dominated the vendors. However, there was soon a food shortage due to hired catering companies. Not only are they bringing in local food trucks including Brazilian BBQ to help feed the Olympics, they are also allowing fans to go to outside vendors because of the shortage. And the churrasquerias are plentiful on the streets of Brazil. We’re excited to see how the local cuisine makes it’s footprint on the crowd of fans and followers from all over the world!
